Police issue alert over bogus callers

The warning comes after one reported incident where an unknown man visited an address in Rawtenstall falsely claiming to be from the council.

Insp. Judith Finney said: “Fortunately we have not had any reported incidents recently whereby anything has been stolen. Most people who call at your door are genuine although I would always advise people to remain vigilant and be on guard for bogus callers.

“Callers may pretend to be officials from organisations such as the council or your utility company when in fact they want to trick, steal or overcharge you for work they may carry out.

“If the caller doesn’t have an appointment with you, do not feel obliged to answer the door and if you are concerned, contact the police.

“I would advise residents to be more alert and not agree to any work being carried out by doorstep sellers until they have had advice or quotes from other traders. Residents should not to pay a deposit or sign anything until they are absolutely sure they want the work carried out and certainly not let strangers into their homes.”
