Conservatives take new-look 'smaller' Pendle Council

This year's borough council election for Pendle was somewhat of a historic one as voters were being asked to select a smaller number of councillors following a reorganisation in the make-up of the council.

And the new make-up saw the Tories take 18 seats to Labour's 15.

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England carried out a review of Pendle Council's wards, ward boundaries and ward names in 2019, and an election for the new wards should have been held last year but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The council's previous 49 seats has now been reduced to 33 with the 20 wards reduced to 12.

A coalition of Labour and the Liberal Democrats previously led the council with the parties' Mohammed Iqbal and David Whipp as leader and deputy leader respectively.

The Conservatives previously held the most number of seats with 20, while Labour had 15 councillors, nine Liberal Democrats and one independent. There were four vacancies.
