Four pupils from the Alternative School rubbed shoulders with some of the country’s leading politicians and Olympic stars on an educational trip to the capital.

Pupils from the school’s sites in Accrington and Barnoldswick visited Downing Street and the Palace of Westminster during the visit to London as well as joining in the celebratory Heroes’ Return parade with Team GB’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

After tours of the Houses of Commons and Lords, and a trip to Number 10 where the group met Andrew Stephenson MP, they got involved in the excitement in Trafalgar Square, enjoyed hands on experiments at the science museum, visited Buckingham Palace and saw the sun set while on the London Eye.

Pupil Hollie said that she was “a little nervous about going on the London Eye as it was much bigger than she expected but loved being able to see all of London from the pod.”

Joshua particularly enjoyed the aviation exhibition and thought that it was “really cool to be able to see all the engines used in aeroplanes”.

Kirsty said: “It was a fantastic experience to be able to see gold medallists Laura Trott and Jason Kenny up close and hear from the inspirational Ellie Simmonds.”

The Alternative School, rated “good with outstanding” elements in June 2014, was opened by founder Kirsty-Anne Pugh in 2007.

It is approved for up to 72 pupils across its three sites in Barnoldswick, Accrington and Blackpool, working with pupils from between 11 and 16 who need additional support and small class sizes in order to reach their full potential.

It offers Duke of Edinburgh activities, enrichment activities, GCSEs and vocational BTECs. For further information, please contact the headteachers Beth France or Hayley Mount on 851800.
