A campaign group fighting against upcoming plans for 270 Colne homes have had their say on Pendle Council’s draft core strategy.

According to chairman of Lidgett and Beyond Owen Oliver, 493 out of 536 members submitted letters calling for the boundaries of the Lidgett Conservation Area to be redrawn to include Favordale.

Other submissions included the belief that Nelson, Colne, Brierfield and Barrowford should be treated separately for planning purposes and housing targets, rather than as the “M65 Corridor”, and that where there is a proposal to develop a greenfield site, the council should insist the developer pays the Community Infrastructure Levy.

Mr Oliver said: “We are delighted to have received such a huge response to our submission on Pendle’s draft Core Strategy.

“People clearly recognise that the beauty of Pendle must be protected, even as we push for economic growth.”

And the group’s secretary Sarah Cockburn-Price added: “L&B believes that the co-location of housing, employment and services must be paramount with all sustainable planning.

“Overall, we believe the draft Core Strategy to be sound, but with a few caveats. Our membership is now nudging 600 and most of those took the time to back our submission to the council.”

Lidgett & Beyond is expecting the formal planning application for a 270-house development to be received by Pendle Council this month.

The housing estate is proposed to cover “The Rough”, a large parcel of open space behind Favordale and off Windermere Avenue, between Castle Road and Skipton Old Road. It is popular locally for dog walking, rambling and recreation and is part of the informally named “Green Lungs of Colne”.

• Lidgett and Beyond will be hosting a fund-raiser at Colne Cricket Club this Saturday at 7pm to add to its fighting fund against the 270-house development. It will include a hot buffet and dancing.
