Shania Jalil (15), who uses a wheelchair, is a Year 10 student at Sir John Thursby Community College and was finding it difficult to gain a placement within local businesses when the award-winning hotel stepped in.

Shania admitted she was nervous but enjoyed the experience and is determined to achieve her aspirations.

Ryan Topper, general manager at Burnley’s Holiday Inn Express said: “We appreciate how difficult it can be to gain experience within the hospitality industry and we are always eager to encourage young people to sample first hand what it is like to work in a hotel.

“Shania is no exception and we were pleased to have her on board.”

Shania’s tasks included helping with administration in the back office, setting up the restaurant and helping with kitchen preparations before a service.

“In addition, we invited Shania’s parents to the hotel where they were able to see for themselves their daughter’s progress as she helped with the lunch service,” added Ryan.
