Up to 30 firefighters from across the county battled a “severe” blaze at a business unit in Barrowford on Wednesday night.

The fire service was called out at 5-55pm to reports of a rubbish fire at Ridgaling Farm in Pasture Lane which had spread to a workshop.

Pasture Lane was closed by police from its junction with Gisburn Road in Barrowford and Blacko Bar Road in Roughlee while firefighters dealt with the blaze.

The operation was scaled back at approximately 9pm when the fire was extinguished but crews remained on site until almost midnight. Nobody was hurt.

Fire crews from Nelson, Colne, Blackburn and Burnley attended the incident and six pumps were required to relay hoses due to a lack of access to water.

Crew Manager Mick Strickland said: “It’s a rubbish fire which has spread to a commercial unit which had several vehicles inside. They have been completely destroyed. I was detached at another station and arrived around two hours after others but it was a severe fire.

“We’re going back up with fire investigation to identify what exactly has been damaged. We are treating it as an accidental commercial fire.”
