The driver, believed to be a 27-year-old man, had to be cut out of the vehicle by the fire service and was taken to hospital in Wythenshawe by the air ambulance.

Police closed the road for around three hours while the man was freed from the car and the vehicle was recovered.

It was the second incident in just over 24 hours on the road between Blacko and Barnoldswick after a collision between a motorcyclist and a car near High Lane and County Brook Lane which left the rider with serious injuries.

Police said that a 19-year-old man riding the motorbike had swerved to avoid a parked car and in doing so clipped an oncoming vehicle just after 4pm on Tuesday.

He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with a suspected broken leg and pelvis.
