The Met Office has issued a weather warning across Lancashire with winds of up to 70mph expected this afternoon. (Thursday)
Gales are anticipated across much of northern England and the north Midlands with gusts of 60 to 70mph expected in places. Heavy rain will accompany the high winds in some areas, with snow affecting some higher level routes.
Officials have warned the public to be aware of the risk of disruption to rush-hour transport and possibly power supplies.
The harsh weather is being caused by a deep Atlantic low passing northern Scotland today. Winds should ease from the west later this evening.
