Pendle Council has bought the former health centre in Colne for an undisclosed sum.
The centre and corner surgery was acquired from NHS Properties last week. The premises has stood empty since it was closed in 2014 when the new health centre in Craddock Road opened.
Councillors who agreed the deal say they made the purchase to ensure the prime town centre building is developed in a way which meets the town’s needs.
The public is to be asked for views about the future the use of the building, with the proviso that any ideas put forward will have to be financially viable. The announcement met with mixed on reception on Facebook.
Council leader Mohammed Iqbal said: “We bought it to ensure we can control what it becomes and make sure Colne continues to be one of the best market towns in the UK.”
