A woman climbed through the back window of her house to escape a blaze that started in her Nelson home in the early hours of this morning.
The woman alerted firefighters to the incident at around 2-30 am and they subsequently spent two and a half hours fighting the fire at her Napier Street mid-terraced house.
Nigel Greenwood, watch manager at Nelson Fire Station, said: “The occupier was upstairs when it happened and climbed through a back window to go to her neighbour’s house to call the fire service.”
He added: “She wasn’t injured and the incident is still under investigation.”
Firemen in two fire engines from Nelson Fire Station dealt with the fire which was in the porch and ground floor of the house. They entered the property wearing breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire using a hose reel and ventilation fan.
The front room of the house were severely damaged by heat and smoke and the first floor was also affected by smoke.
