COLNE couldn’t repeat their Worsley Cup Final heroics on Saturday as they lost to champions Ramsbottom in the Ron Singleton Colne Trophy - the Lancashire League’s traditional curtain-raiser - by 80 runs at the Horsfield.
Ramsbottom wicketkeeper Andy Holt claimed seven catches - the pick being one at full stretch to see off Colne substitute professional Andrea Agathagelou off his opposite number Shanan Stewart for 27.
Former Clitheroe youngster Tim Le Breton (4-49) took four wickets for his new side, while captain Jon Fielding (4-20) also chipped in with four as Colne were bowled out for 134.
Horsfielders skipper Matt Wilson (pictured) top-scored with 26 and new signing Nathan Whitehead from Burnley made 21 as Colne slipped to 105-9 from 60-2.
A last-wicket stand of 29 between Saleem Quereshi (28) and Nigel Rimmer (7 not out) peoved in vain.
Stewart top-scored for Ramsbottom with 57 after openers Jamie Pilling (45) and Keith Webb (40) put on 95.
The champions closed on 214-4, with the pick of the Colne bowlers being Adam Holt with 3-51.
Colne, following their opening day league defeat on Sunday to Haslingden, are again in action twice this weekend.
