Nelson were unceremoniously dumped out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle after a second half capitulation led to a 4-0 home defeat to Northern League high flyers Newton Aycliffe.
Matty O’Neill went close on two occasions for the hosts early on, forcing a superb save from goalkeeper James Winter before missing the target with a left-footed drive moments later.
The visitors had only ever progressed to the preliminary round of the competition once in their history, but they made strides towards amending that statistic when taking the lead just shy of the half-hour mark.
Against the run of play at Victoria Park, Blues stopper Ben Woodhead was beaten by Dennis Knight’s exquisite free kick as the ball found the top corner from 30 yards.
After the interval, with the Admirals chasing the equaliser, the away side broke to double their advantage on the hour as Stuart Banks finished off a fine solo run. Talismanic forward Matty Moffatt made it 3-0 in the 80th minute after racing past Jake Lloyd to apply a cool finish and he rounded off the scoring five minutes later.
Mark Fell’s side return to league action tomorrow as they travel to Bootle (kick off 3 p.m.).
