Jensen, 38 next month, is keen to underline he is not retiring after being released by Burnley after 10 years’ service, with manager Sean Dyche unable to guarantee him first team football.

Alexander played on until he was 40, and “The Beast” hopes to achieve something similar: “I’ll keep going, I feel I’m still good enough, and the gaffer said he’s 100% sure I can and he will give me a full recommendation, and that’s nice to know.

“I wasn’t in his plans, and that’s how football is, but hopefully someone else can use the old man, because he can still do it.

“I have a lot of people to prove wrong and that’s my determination.

“I learned this from Grezza, people will say ‘when are you retiring?’, but you have to prove them wrong every time you walk onto the pitch, wise words.

“We had the same mentality, though he’s played a few hundred more games!

“But great advice from a great player and ultimate professional.

“I’d be proud to come close to what he’s done.”

The Dane felt hard done to at times playingecond fiddle to Lee Grant at Burnley: “I’m not going to sit here and dig people out but everybody knows I had a special relationship with Phil Hughes for seven years, and Granty has been with Billy (Mercer) for a long time, and that’s just the way it is.

People might disagreement but it’s my opinion that if there was a 50/50 decision at some point, I got a funny feeling it would point somewhere else other than me.

“I have to point out Granty has been magnificent, he has been untouchable for the last six months, so I wouldn’t say it’s been the case in that time, but there were ups and downs earlier in the season and last season.”
