A BURGEONING football academy is looking to expand further in 2012.

Mentors of Excellence in Football Scheme has been going from strength to strength with its first team – MEFS FC – taking the Accrington Combination League by storm and direct links being set up with Stalybridge Celtic FC.

The Burnley-based academy has already seen local youngster Scott Cawtherley progress to Stalybridge’s Under 21 programme and Education Scheme and the plan is now to get more players up the pro and semi-pro footballing ladder.

To help with this, MEFS , in preparation for the 2012/2013 season is expanding to four clubs with plans to add a reserves open age team, an Under 19s and an Under 17s team

A squad of 20 will be selected for each club – including the most talented players from around the region.

A weekly player development academy will start this month to which players could apply to attend on a three-month programme, after which the best 20 players in each group will be kept on for the following season.

New coaches including Josh Sheppard (former Aston Villa youth player and goalkeeper) will be joining the team of specialist coaches, who will work with Mr Majid Shafiq, head of education and player development at Stalybridge Celtic FC, to develop the players within the new programmes.

Anybody interested in finding out more about the academy can do so by emailing their deails to m.shafiq@mefsfootballacademy.co.uk or by ringing 07886683004.

The final squads will be announced in April 2012.
