Steven Defour’s representative has confirmed a number of Premier League clubs are interested in the Clarets midfielder.

The Belgium international is out for the season after knee surgery, but enjoyed an impressive campaign as an ever-present up to the end of January.

Defour, signed from Anderlecht for a then-club record in the summer of 2016, has another year remaining on his contract, with Burnley holding an option for a further year.

And Defour, 30 this month, is open to discussing a new deal at Turf Moor.

But representative Christian Pala said: “I can say there is interest in Steven – but I would be surprised if there wasn’t after an amazing season.

“I have been contacted by a lot of different agents claiming interest from certain Premier League clubs, but I have told them to speak to the club.

“It is normal there is interest in him, I think he would fit top teams in the Premier League – he is a perfect team player and gives his all for sure.

“I don’t know what Burnley are looking to do with him in the future, but I am a little bit surprised they haven’t spoken to us, but we will see what happens.”

Defour is splitting his rehabilitation between Belgium and Burnley, and Pala added: “Steven, at this moment, is only interested in getting back fit, and he is working very hard to get back. He trusts I will do the best for him.

“Out of respect to Burnley, they will be the first club we speak to about his future, but we have heard nothing at the moment.

“The manager is happy with Steven, so we will see.”

Speaking in February about the prospect of him signing a new contract with Burnley, Pala had said: “Steven is happy, but this will probably be his last big contract so everything has to fit.

“I don’t think it will be difficult if everybody understands which way we all want to go.”
