Colne finally managed to play their second round tie in the LFA Challenge Trophy against Holker Old Boys on Wednesday night after four postponements over the last month due to the weather.
In the end the game was played at Barrow AFC’s Holker Ground as the Reds came out on top in a hard fought match played in difficult conditions.
Both sides fought to control the ball in the strong swirling wind throughout the first half and Brad Hubbold almost gave Holker the lead in the opening stages when his shot was deflected just past the post in a crowded area.
After Jason Hart saw his diagonal shot fly just past the far post after 15 minutes, Steve Cunningham’s side went close again midway through the half when Danny Boyle brought a great save from keeper Ross Liddicott to push his 20-yard shot round the upright.
Colne eventually made the breakthrough after 69 minutes when Kieran Demaine provided a perfect through ball for Tom Berwick just inside the penalty area and he found the bottom corner of the net with a well timed finish to give the Reds the lead.
Chris Thompson produced an excellent save to prevent Benedict Rebello’s piledrive from finding the net while Hart clipped the post late on from Lee Pugh’s assist.
The Reds will now take on Bamber Bridge in the qusrter-final of the competition, with a date yet to be confirmed.
