On Saturday a depleted Colne faced tough opposition from Northern Counties East Premier Division side Liversedge in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.
And from the kick-off the tactics of the Liversedge team became evident when Warrick Charton’s long range effort flew over the crossbar.
Liversedge continued playing long balls out of defence up to their speedy forwards, and Colne did not help themselves by giving the ball away and conceding far too much possession to the big Liversedge central defenders.
On 20 minutes Colne paid the price when they lost possession in midfield, and Charlton raced through before curling a shot into the far corner past Chris Thompson.
Colne were further hampered when their prolific striker Jason Hart suffered a recurrence of an earlier injury and limped off the field.
But at half-time Colne were still in the game, trailing by just one goal.
After a slow start to the second half, Colne began to slowly up the tempo.
Ed O’Neill sent in some crosses which caused problems for the Liversedge defence. He then combined well with Ben Bridson, but his shot was deflected for a corner.
Then Mickey Saunders came close when he latched onto a free kick by Thompson into the area but his shot was scrambled away to safety.
At this stage Colne were clearly on top as Liversedge dropped further back on the defensive.
And on 65 minutes Colne looked certain to equalise when O’Neill released Carl Ellerton through the middle, but with only the keeper to beat he chipped the ball over the crossbar.
Minutes later Thompson made a brave save at the feet of Charlton but then he was helpless when, after a goalmouth scramble, Matthew Bugg hit the ball across the goals and it nestled into the far corner.
In the final minutes Ben Hoskin brought out a good save from Jamie Abbott before he pulled a goal back with a good run and shot into the top far corner.
Tomorrow Colne host Ashton Athletic at the XLCR Stadium and entry to the game is free for everybody as a gesture to encourage support.
