Joe Gaughan scored a brilliant hat-trick as Barnoldswick Town beat Evo-Stik First Division North side Harrogate Railway Athletic 5-0 on Tuesday to go through to the West Riding County Cup quarter-final.

Town went ahead in the ninth minute as, from a second-successive corner, John Beckwith crossed to Gaughan, who cracked a glorious left foot shot from fully 25 yards past Thomas Goodwin in the visitors’ goal.

On the hour, Town made it 2-0 as a Gaughan cross was dummied by Beckwith, who allowed the ball to run to Harry Thompson, and he took the ball on and slipped the ball past Goodwin.

Three minutes later, Gaughan scored his second when he cracked another left foot shot past Goodwin.

On 75 minutes, it was 4-0, as Matthew Simpson scored his first goal for the club.

Picking the ball up just inside the visitors’ half, he ran at the defence, outstripping them before rounding Goodwin and tucking the ball into the empty net from six yards out.

Gaughan completed his hat-trick with four minutes left, as his right foot shot flew inside the right hand post of Goodwin’s net.

On Saturday, Town drew 2-2 in the league with Cammell Laird 1907 at the Silentnight Stadium.

The visitors went in front three minutes after the break whenCraig Cairns lobbed Jordan Gidley.

Town drew level on the hour mark, Gaughan playing a clever back heel into the path of Arley Barnes, who drilled the ball low inside the post.

Town then fell behind on 76 minutes, as a cross was handled by Shaun Airey, and Jamie Henders crashed the penalty into the top corner.

But seven minutes from time, Gaughan hit the post, and reacted to cross the ball, which was turned into his own net by Jay Clare.
