League goes goal crazy on opening day

The opening day of the Burnley and District Summer League went goal crazy with 47 scored in five games!

In the game of the day, last year’s runners up and Harry Walsh Cup winners George IV were beaten by Red House in an eight-goal thriller. Lee Barrett scored a hat trick for George, but all in vain as Red House ran out 5-3 winners.

In the same group, Burnley Wood Casuals served up a treat as they beat St Paul’s 7-3. Dale Tomlinson (2) and Anthony Norton netted for St Paul’s.

Dugdale edged out Craven 4-3, while a couple of hat tricks from veteran strikers Ricki Sutcliffe and Craig Robinson helped Prairie beat Sacred Hearts Under 18s 8-1. Scott Robinson and Daz Taylor completed the scoring.

FC George IV beat AFC Burnley 13-0. Danny Benson scored six, to add to a hat-trick from Berat Mjekiqi, a brace from Reece Mcgovern and a a goal apiece for Jordan Cheetham and Luke Riley.

• THE Warburton Youth Football League presentation evening is tonight at the Burnley League Club, Richard Street, from 7-30 p.m.

And the league are already looking forward to next season, taking applications for for ages Under 7s to Under 16s.
