Lowton confident of Chelsea double

Chelsea’s opening game in the defence of their Premier League title finished in a 3-2 defeat to the Clarets at Stamford Bridge, a fixture which saw the hosts culminate the 90 minutes with nine men.

A Sam Vokes double and a Stephen Ward strike provided Sean Dyche’s side with a commanding lead at the interval before debutant Alvaro Morata and Brazilian David Luiz set up a tense finale.

Following a fifth win in succession, the first time that has been achieved by the club in the top flight in 50 years, the former Aston Villa full back said: “It’s another big game.

“There’s something about playing at Turf Moor under the lights.

“It’s a difficult place to come at any time but we’ve had some great moments at night since I’ve been here.

“We know how good Chelsea are but I’m sure they won’t be relishing coming here after we’ve won five in a row.

“We’re looking forward to it.

“That would be another achievement for us this season.

“We’ve got a great chance after winning five games in a row.

“Confidence is high and we’ll go in to the game looking to win again.”

The 26-year-old, who has made 22 appearances this term, says that his team mates have been fearless all season, a trait that has contributed to the success this term.

Victory over Antonio Conte’s Blues, following Arsenal’s defeat against Newcastle United at St James’s Park at the weekend, would see the Clarets break back in to the top six.

“That’s how we’ve worked all season and it has helped to push us in to this position,” Lowton said.

“We’re not going in to games fearing the worst, we’re going in there looking for the best outcome and it’s proving good for us at the moment.

“We stayed in the division last year which is the ultimate aim but we said at the start of this season that we want to push on and try and finish higher.

“To be two points off sixth at this stage of the season is massive.

“It’s credit to the manager and all the lads.”

He added: “We just keep pushing on.

“The manager was a huge influence when I first joined, the first team talk that we had that we want to keep moving forward as a club.

“We’ve done that progressively since I’ve been here so the next thing is to qualify for Europe.

“That would be a huge achievement.

“Five wins in a row is always going to help with that.

“We’ve still got some tough games coming up but we want to finish as high as we can.

“The next game is always the biggest thing.”
