THE first chance of the match fell to Blues captain Javed Mohammed but his weak shot didn’t trouble visiting keeper Sonne.
Ralph Welch then went on a long run down the touchline but the ball went just out of play. The visitors came more into the game after Nelson’s bright start.
However after 15 minutes Jerome Matthews rounded Sonne and calmly slotted the ball home to give Nelson the lead. As half-time approached Matthews turned provider when he set up Welch, whose shot from distance hit the inside of both posts only to rebound clear.
The second half started with neither side in charge. As Nelson began to find the fluency they showed in the first half Nasir Hussain snatched at a good chance from a right wing cross allowing Sonne to smother his shot.
Northwich then brought on an extra forward as they tried to find a way back into the game. On several occasions Nelson’s Matthews’ first touch let him down. Welch then broke into the penalty area in the 60th minute but was brought down by Sonne who was immediately sent off. Welch converted the resulting the penalty with ease to give Nelson some breathing space.
Despite Northwich being down to 10 men they tried to take the game to Nelson and Worrell had to save at full stretch.
In the dying minutes of the match, Brett Ferguson scored his first ever goal for Nelson to make it 3-0 and wrap up the points.
