Nelson kick-off their season tomorrow with a trip to Ashington tomorrow in the Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round.

The Blues then open their Hallmark Security League campaign with a derby at Padiham on Wednesday night, barring either side facing an FA Cup replay.

New Admirals boss Phil Eastwood is away for the first two games, due to a prior engagement before taking the post, but he is looking forward to getting his teeth into the role.

He said: “Performances have been good in pre-season, and overall the lads have been excellent since we took over.

“We haven’t got one of the biggest budgets in the league, but we have a very young, hungry group of players who are willing to listen and learn.

“We will win games, and I’m sure we will lose games as well, but every game we will have the right mentality to go out and try to win, and see what happens.”

Eastwood has added the likes of defender Kevin Brown and former Preston North End keeper Steven James to his squad – who ended last season with Clitheroe in the Evo-Stik First Division North.

The new manager knows it will be difficult to try and emulate neighbours Colne, who won the league last term, but, as he said shortly after taking the reins: “I want to try and build something that can move forward.

“Promotion is the target, but we have to be realistic in that we need to build the foundations this season, have a right good go and look to build for the future.

“It took Colne a couple of years, so we can’t promise anything this year, there are no play-offs – you can’t finish fifth and still be promoted.“The league is one of the hardest to get out of, so it’s a tough ask, but we’ll have a go and try and get together a competitive side, play the right way and work hard.

“You shouldn’t be playing if you don’t want to win the league, but we want to put something in place for the next few years, to progress.

“We are realistic – it could take 12/18 months, a couple of years, to get where we want to be.”

The Admirals are taking a coach to North East side Ashington tomorrow in the FA Cup.

Seats are available for £12 per person.

The coach departs at 9-30 a.m. from Darwen Services with kick-off scheduled for 3 p.m.
