NELSON paid their first ever visit to Wigan Robin Park’s new facilities but came away pointless.

Wigan pressed from the start with Nelson’s keeper Nathan Worrall having to palm away a dangerous cross early on.

Minutes later the Blues’ Ralph Welch broke clear and his angled drive was tipped round the post for a corner by home no.1 Foulds.

Both sides were finding the slippery surface difficult to play on after heavy pre kick-off rain. This caused both teams rely on too much route one tactics, and it led to many offsides at both ends.

A poor clearance from Kalim Hafeji put Nelson under pressure but they survived.

Shakeel Butt was then put through on goal but was well marshalled by two defenders and when Welch then crossed from the right, Jerrome Matthews’ touch went just the wrong side of the post.

Just when it seemed neither side were going to create a clear cut chance Wigan took the lead on 30 minutes when Kay slotted the ball through for Harrison to score. Abid Uddin then shot narrowly over from distance as Nelson tried to get back into the game, which they did when Javeed Mohammed headed into the top corner from a left wing cross. Within a minute some bad defending then let Wigan back in front through Kay.

Nelson started the second half brightly and following a long run past two defenders Welch shot wide when he should have done better.

At the other end Nelson were indebted to Dan Tatley for a goal area clearance as Wigan pressed.

Just after the hour mark Uddin was put through on goal but he shot well wide and Welch then put Jason Powrie clear through but his weak shot was straight at Foulds.

Nelson continued to take the game to Wigan and as a last throw of the dice brought on Majid Ahmed.

There was a chance late-on for Powrie but Wigan held on to take the game 2-1.

Tomorrow Nelson are at home to Northwich Villa.

Final Score: Wigan Robin Park 2, Nelson 1
