But his record run of clean sheets finally came to an end.

On Sunday, in the 2-0 win against Albania in Tirana, Pope broke former Claret Chris Woods’ record of shutouts in his first five games for England taking his tally to six.

And he looked on target for a seventh, with England 1-0 up thanks to a 19th-minute Harry Kane penalty, until, just before the hour, John Stones dallied on the ball at the back, and Brighton’s Jakub Moder fired home.

Pope had gone 488 minutes without conceding for England, but had no chance with a fierce strike - the first shot on target Gareth Southgate’s side had faced in their opening three World Cup qualifying games.

England recovered, however, and went on to claim a late winner as Harry Maguire lashed home from a corner after Stones headed the ball back across goal.
