Not many newly promoted sides will go to the Etihad and Stamford Bridge and pick up points against the Premier League’s top two.
In fact, none of the other clubs in England’s top tier have had the capability to do that. While Chelsea have dropped just four points on home soil in 10 months - since defeat to Sunderland last term - Manchester City have won eight of their 12 league fixtures at home this season.
And what makes that achievement even more astonishing is that Sean Dyche’s side, worth millions of pounds less than the aforementioned duo, have had to claw back deficits on both occasions.
This time they fell behind to Branislav Ivanovic’s opener in the 14th minute when the Serbian defender swept the ball inside the near post following great work from Eden Hazard.
Ben Mee’s header with nine minutes of normal time remaining was the equaliser that helped the Clarets climb to 18th in the table, with QPR ahead by virtue of a solitary goal.
Chelsea, as expected, started the fixture the stronger of the two sides. Juan Cuadrado forced an early save from Tom Heaton when meeting Felipe Luis’s centre, though the visitors hit back when Thibaut Courtois claimed Ashley Barnes’s stinging volley at the second attempt from Michael Kightly’s cross.
However, just before the quarter-of-an-hour mark Hazard showed his class. The winger, who has just committed his future to the Blues, showed great feet and a frightening turn of pace to beat Kightly, David Jones and Ben Mee to pull the ball back from the byeline to find Ivanovic who beat Heaton with ease.
The hosts almost doubled the advantage almost instantaneously when Hazard flicked a pass in to Oscar infield and, once Heaton had spilled the Brazilian midfielder’s strike at his near post, Mee was forced to hack clear under press from Diego Costa.
The Clarets managed the game spectacularly, refusing to sit behind the ball and invite their opponents on to them. Skipper Jason Shackell found the stands with a header from Kieran Trippier’s corner and midway inside the half Courtois stooped to deny Barnes’s shot on the turn from the angle of the box.
After Trippier’s enticing centre floated beyond Barnes, Danny Ings and Kightly after taking a nick off the head of Luis, the half ended with a couple of penalty shouts.
Firstly Martin Atkinson waved away appeals after Ivanovic’s shot appeared to strike the outstretched arm of Kightly before further cries were ignored when Costa went to ground easily under the challenge of Shackell.
The Clarets continued to impress after the break, unfazed by the stadia, occasion or the £200m group of players they were up against.
Against Manchester United at Old Trafford the Clarets had the performance but didn’t have the result to boot. This time they were eager to address that.
Barnes was denied early in the half when his rasping strike from an awkward angle was tipped over the bar by Courtois as the deflected effort threatened to loop over the Belgium international goalkeeper.
Heaton fell to his left to save from Costa following Hazard’s incisive pass, but had a quiet afternoon from that point.
Instead the game turned in the 70th minute when Chelsea were reduced to 10 men. Nemanja Matic was the man dismissed when retaliating to Barnes’s challenge, with referee Atkinson having no hesitation in brandishing the red.
Despite the numeral disadvantage, substitute Ramires almost restored the lead for the Blues when he powered an effort just wide of Heaton’s right hand upright.
At the other end, Courtois showed his class to turn Barnes’s instinctive drive around the post once Trippier’s free-kick fell in to his path via a ricochet off Michael Keane.
But Burnley weren’t to be kept out for much longer. Trippier sat the resulting corner up to the back post and Mee towered above Ramires to head beyond Courtois.
Cesc Fabregas blazed over the bar from Willian’s assist as the home side pushed for a winner, but it was the visitors who could have stolen maximum points.
Deep in to stoppage time Ings broke, was held up by Ramires, stepped inside on the edge of the penalty area but swung an effort wide of the angle off balance.
