A brace from Mark Threlfall helped Barnoldswick Town to victory at Padiham on Wednesday night.
Town welcomed Liam Britton back to the starting line-up after he missed the Colne match through injury, and also into the starting line-up came Ben Gorman, with John Beckwith dropping onto the bench.
Town, playing up the slope in the first half, won two corners in the first five minutes, and from the second, taken by Joe Gaughan, Threlfall headed home at the unguarded near post to put Town one up.
Town continued to look the more likely to score, Jack Hargreaves shooting straight at Sean Davis in the Padiham goal. Padiham’s first threat came after 18 minutes, as a long ball was picked up and drilled across the six-yard line, with Shaun Airey hacking the ball clear.
Padiham came more into the game and just after the half hour a free kick taken out wide found Lee Botham free at the far post, but he directed his header the wrong side of the post.
At the other end, Gorman did well out wide on the Padiham right, he picked out Threlfall unmarked on the edge of the area, but he blazed high and wide from a good position.
Chris Turner picked up the ball and drove a shot just wide of Jordan Gidley’s right hand post, before, right on half-time, Threlfall notched his second goal, as Carl Ellerton threaded a great cross along the six-yard line, and the former Colne man side-footed into the roof of the net.
The second half saw Padiham pressing to get back into the game, but they were relegated to long balls towards the far post, usually Botham getting onto the end of them, but unable to direct his headers goalwards.
Gidley had to make a good save after 71 minutes, diving low to his left to save from Joshua Emmot.
Then in the final minute, a ball in from Chris Turner saw Seydou Bamba head goalwards, but Liam Blades on the post headed off the line.
Town are at West Didsbury tomorrow, and host Darwen on Tuesday.
