New Barnoldswick Town boss Matt Barnes feels his side have to ability to challenge in the North West Counties Premier Division.
Especially if they bring bravery and a good attitude on top of their talent.
Barnes had liked what he has seen in a tough pre-season campaign, and feels Town are ready to go tomorrow, when they travel to Charnock Richard.
Barnes said: “We’re looking in good shape, and the minimum ambition is top six with the side we’ve got.
“We don’t just want to be a number, we want to go well in the league and have good runs in the cups as well.
“We want to do something .
“I asked the lads ‘what will make us different from previous years?’, and the common theme was bravery and attitude.
“If we lose the ball, we have to win it back as quickly as possible.
“We’re good enough, if we have that bravery and attitude as well.”
Barnes knows the fixture list could have been kinder in terms of their start, with a trip to Charnock followed up with a home derby against Padiham on Tuesday night, and he admitted: “We probably couldn’t have opened with a tougher test, away at Charnock Richard.
“They will go from strength to strength – one of the teams to beat.
“And Padiham is a derby – we’ve had them watched a few times in pre-season.
“We want to get a good start – our target is probably nine points at least from the first five games, and we’ll go from there.”
Barnes has managed to add to his squad ahead of the start of the season, landing Rhain Hellawell on loan from Chester – an academy product who signed professional terms this summer. And he is also hoping for “one or two more” in the next week or so.
