Joe Gaughan hit four goals on Wednesday night as Barnoldswick Town claimed their first win of the season, a 7-0 triumph at AFC Darwen.

Mark Threlfall gave Town a second minute lead at the Anchor Ground, before Gaughan claimed his first of the night after quarter of an hour.

Five minutes later he added his second, and six minutes from the break he rounded off a first half hat-trick to all but seal the points.

Gaughan added a fourth goal midway through the second half, before late strikes from Robert Grimes and Ben Gorman completed an impressive night’s work for Stewart Airdrie’s side.

On Saturday, Town’s first league game of the season ended in a 5-2 reverse at AFC Liverpool.

Matthew Williams opened the scoring for the home side on 25 minutes with a perfectly placed free kick which flew into the net beyond the reach of Barlick keeper Jordan Gidley.

But Town levelled matters three minutes before half-time when an attempted clearance rebounded into the path of Threlfall, whose effort was saved, but Harry Thompson netted from the rebound with a chip.

The hosts responded immediately, as striker Jason Carey made it 2-1, lifting the ball over Gidley to restore their lead,

The Reds added to their advantage two minutes after the restart as Carey met Matty Williams’ corner with a glancing header at the near post.

And two minutes later, the Reds got their fourth, as Jack Hont sent a through-ball to Adegbenro. He dribbled past his marker and fired across the area, allowing an unmarked Belger to slot the ball home.

The home side didn’t have it all their own way as a defensive lapse allowed Thompson in again to make it 4-2 on 55 minutes, and despite the two goal advantage the Reds were made to work hard to maintain the lead.

But four minutes from time, Adegbenro sealed the game, beating the offside trap to fire home from close range to make it 5-2.

Tomorrow, Town are at Irlam, and on Wednesday night they travel to Padiham for a derby clash.
