After good performances in their previous two matches lifted Town out of the relegation positions, they suffered a blow with a 6-1 thumping against Ashton Athletic on Saturday.

Town took the lead after five minutes as Paul Walker’s free kick swerved at the last moment, forcing Ashton skipper Ian Rowlands to head into the top corner of his own net.

Ashton equalised after 25 minutes, Paul Watson drilling a great shot past Chris Taylor from the edge of the area

But a minute before the break, Anthony Pollard and Joel Melia combined to find John Beckwith, who was brought down for a penalty, but Mark Threlfall saw his effort saved.

Five minutes after the interval, Ashton took the lead, as a free kick was headed in by unmarked centre half Luke Holden, and two minutes later, a corner found Rowlands, who side-footed home from six yards out.

There was a hold up as Pollard twisted his ankle and was stretchered off, and worse followed for Town as Ashton added to their lead as another corner saw Watson score again.

On 74 minutes, another flag kick saw Rowlands score againbefore the same player netted from at the far post from a free kick.

Town are at leaders Runcorn Linnets tomorrow.
