Town weathered a late Congleton storm to claim a point in a 1-1 draw at the Silentnight Stadium on Saturday.

In stoppage time, Ian Willis hit the bar from 30 yards, and Jamie Petrie also hit the bar with the rebound, before keeper Jordan Gidley tipped the ball over. Barnoldswick then defended three successive corners to see out the game.

The first half saw few clear-cut chances for either side with Kieron Kenny heading over a Sam Marshall corner for the visitors, while Brian Matthews volleyed over under pressure for the Bears.

Town’s Mark Threlfall had the chance to test Dominic Kurasik when he went through down the right, but he gave the Congleton keeper a comfortable save.

Barlick made their next chance count as Ben Gorman switched the ball over to the left for John Beckwith to run onto. The winger was able to outrun Willis and calmly finished to open the scoring in the 31st minute.

Beckwith had another chance when Town broke down the left, but he fired over.

In the second half, a quick throw in gave Ben Gorman a one-on-one with Kurasik, but the keeper stood tall to palm away the strike. The resulting corner from Arley Barnes was headed over by Threlfall.

The equaliser arrived three minutes before the hour mark when Lee Jackson put a low cross into the box from the left and a Town defender slid across to try and block it, with the ball looping into the top corner of his own net.

Congleton’s George Whiteoak had a header cleared off the line, then Willis was sent through, but Gidley saved.

Then came the injury time drama, but Town held firm to preserve their point.

Town host West Didsbury and Chorlton tomorrow before the derby at Colne on Tuesday.
