‘We never got going’ - Sean Dyche

Burnley slumped to the bottom of the table as they went down 4-0 at West Brom, extending their goal drought to 706 minutes in the process.

Summer transfer target Craig Dawson headed the hosts ahead, before a Saido Berahino brace either side of half-time, and Graham Dorrans put the seal on a miserable day late on.

Dyche, without the injured Danny Ings, Sam Vokes, Matt Taylor, David Jones and Dean Marney, wasn’t using their absence as an excuse: “We’re as disappointed in the performance as the result, we never got going and you can’t afford to do that in the Premier League.

“But credit to West Brom, I thought they played some really good football.

“We knew they had four midfielders rather than wide men, trying to get their full backs out, they rotated well and we just didn’t deal with it.

“Obviously we had to make changes, but that’s why we have a squad. We wanted players to come in and deliver performances, and it is a squad game.

“We pride ourselves on performance levels and how we apply ourselves, how they are game ready, but there were no signs of that.

“Jonah and Marns have struck up a very good relationship in there, they know each other and the team’s game, and obviously it didn’t look like that first half.

“We made some changes, which slightly worked, though not enough to get us back into the game.”

Burnley had enjoyed three successive clean sheets before the game, but Dyche was disappointed to lose two goals from corners before the break: “Very poor by our standards, obviously. You go in 2-0 down and they’ve had the better share of the game by a mile, but it’s not as if Tom is making save after save.

“You want to go in 0-0 and you have a chance to change it, but we didn’t have that and it was all uphill from there.

“The next goal was vital, and they get that, and it’s a tough task from there on in.

“At 2-0, if you get one back, that makes them nervous, which they have been recently here, but they are an experienced side, certainly the midfield, and I thought they showed good signs of that.

“We looked a little unsure of ourselves from the off.

“We’ve only had that once so far this season, the first half at Swansea, and second half we we excellent.

“Here we never found our feet from the first whistle to the last.”
