Colne took the honours with a 6-2 win in the local friendly at Barnoldswick on Tuesday night thanks to a hat-trick from Ben Wharton and goals for new boys Jake Hargreaves and Eddie Busfield.
The deadlock was broken after 25 minutes when Matty Beadle’s cross to the far post saw Simon Nangle pushed to the floor, and the referee awarded a penalty, which Wharton converted.
But with half time approaching, Joe Gaughan broke on the left wing and his cross was met perfectly at the near post by another former Reds striker Marc Coyne to send a glancing header into the top corner for an equaliser.
In the second half, Lee Pugh’s cross fell to Hargreaves, and he fired home a deserved goal.
Boyle was then brought down in the area, and Wharton again fired home the penalty to make it 3-1.
Barnoldswick came back strongly and scored another quality goal when Aaron Hollindrake found the net with a spectacular overhead kick.
Colne made it 4-2 when Hargreaves linked with Boyle to set up a chance for Busfield to fire a shot into the top corner after 80 minutes.
Two minutes later, Boyle saw his chip palmed away by the Town keeper and Hargreaves fired in the loose ball from a tight angle.
And Colne were not finished yet as Ted Cockett’s excellent through ball sent Boyle away on the right, and his cross was fired home by Wharton.
On Friday night, a bumper crowd of 526 watched Colne go down 2-0 to a Burnley XI at the XLCR Stadium, with goals from Tom Anderson and Khius Metz.
Tonight Colne are at home to Atherton Collieries, kick-off 7-45 p.m., and tomorrow the Reds’ game at Nelson has been cancelled.
