DESPITE freezing temperatures and snow flurries, the stalwart members of Nelson Golf Club turned out in their numbers to witness the traditional drive-in of their new captains.

Leading off was new men’s captain David Thornber, followed by lady captain Penny Stanworth, junior captain James Guest, and finally senior captain Bernard Casey.

For the first time since the mid-1990s, Nelson Ladies are fielding a scratch team this year.

Their first match was earlier this month against Hillside of Southport.

It was a tight match which ended in a half – 2½ points each.

The team was Jane McGregor, Lynne Grandfield, Sophie Potter, Sandra Driver and Alison Short.

The new lady captain Penny Stanworth had a good start to the season when her team beat lady vice captain Lyn Hepworth’s team by 24 stableford points.

It was a fun event that was well attended, and all participants received a chocolate Easter egg from the lady captain.
