Colne Badminton Club’s Under 16s have done it again, completing a hat-trick of successes this season!
As a Manchester Performance Centre satellite club, Colne were invited to enter two teams in the National Inter Performance Centre Tournament, and the first team went on to claim gold.
The tournament format consisted of three groups in a round robin, and then a play-off between the winners of each group.
Colne 2’s players were Michael Fisher, James Dale, Ruairi Sweeney, Zoe Smith and Sam Naughton Baldwin, and they played well in group one, but despite only losing 4 games, just missed the play-offs.
Colne 1’s players, Theo Rowan, Chris Kay, George Connolly, Billy Jacks, and Merrill Tsang, were in group 2, and won through to the play-offs without losing a game.
There they faced Yorkshire PC, consisting of county players, winning a tight match 3-2 to secure at least a silver medal.
Colne then beat Merseyside PC 5-0 win to win the tournament and gold medals.
It wasn’t all plain sailing, but with support from all the team members and keeping mature heads on shoulders, Colne faced and overcame adversity, showing how valuable club spirit, team work, mental preparation, hard work on court week after week, and commitment to training sessions pays off.
Chris Kay won Player of the Day, taking home a brand new £60 Babolat racket.
This brings up the treble for Colne this season, who have also triumphed in the Premier League 4 Sport National Final and East Lancs Junior League.
