COLNE had to dig deep to record their first victory of the season beating Crosby St Marys 12-8.

Led expertly by man of the match Dan Sutcliffe the hosts heaped pressure on the Liverpool outfit and made them pay the price for a missed penalty when a knock on saw Adam Wagstaff mount a sublime 70-yard sprint to touch down for Colne’s first try which he converted.

St Marys, who considered themselves unfortunate to miss the earlier kick after the menacing wind turned the ball on to the post, could have found themselves further behind when Alex Wood and Jack Wiper combined to free Dan Frazer but his break was thwarted just short of the try line.

The away side pulled themselves back in to the game when a flowing set move saw them cross over in the corner but Colne responded well and made it 12-5 when a well-worked set-piece was finished off by Jack Handforth. But a dubious decision gave St Marys a penalty moments later which was converted to leave the score 12-8 at half-time.

Neither side was able to have an impact on the scoreline after the interval as an increasingly messy pitch made for lack of grip in the scrums, while the wind persisted to hamper the line outs but Colne held firm for victory.

Elsewhere, Nelson and Colne under 15s got their campaign off to the best possible start with a 15-0 triumph over Rossendale.

The Rossendale backline was resilient for the majority of the first half but it was finally breached as the interval loomed when a set-piece move from the back of the scrum saw Brandon Dean score in the corner.

Kallan Turner made an instant impact after the break as he split the Rossendale defence before side-stepping the full-back to extend Colne’s lead.

Colne’s forwards continued to work hard and recycle the ball at the breakdown with Jake Butterworth and Wandaly Piliso driving the ball hard into the Rossendale defence. And their efforts were rewarded as Colne exploited the space and worked the overlap to round off the scoring.

Sam Wilkin was awarded man of the match.
