A very inexperienced Under 16 Colne side came to a well-earned victory over Huddersfield YMCA.
Huddersfield lost the toss and so Colne decided to receive the kick-off.
Rohan O’Connor caught the high kick, stepped inside, and danced his way through a Huddersfield side that hadn’t appeared to have turned up. After a 70-metre run, Rohan put the ball down to score the try. David Pickup failed to get the conversion meaning Colne were 5-0 up.
Huddersfield tried again with the kick-off having been woken up by the try. After a long series of phases Huddersfield got a turnover followed by a kick through to an open field behind Colne’s scramble defence. After regaining the ball and with an amazing cover tackle by Joe Danson, Huddersfield passed the ball into the centres that broke a couple of lazy tackles and were under the posts to score. The conversion took Huddersfield in front making the score 7-5.
After an inspirational team-talk, Colne came into the second half with all cylinders firing. With a few breakdowns of play and some good handling by the winger under a high ball, Colne went over for their second try. A conversion by Dave took the score to 12-7.
After a few more phases, Colne were inside Huddersfield’s 22-meter line. After pushing the Huddersfield defence right back to their try-line, Colne eventually pushed over for the try. The conversion was missed leaving the score at 17-7.
In the last 10 minutes, with big tackles coming out of nowhere and lots of scrums, for the first time in the game Colne were struggling. After pushing one of the bigger Huddersfield lads over Colne’s try line, the score was now set at 17-14. And despite late Huddersfield pressure the score remained the same. The coach’s player of the week was Joe Danton.
