Dave Drinkwater won a thrilling decider in a marathon Pendle Pool League Team Knockout Final as Alexandra SC A beat Shorthomers D 4-3 at Colne Legion.
The final turned out to be the longest knockout match in the history of the league, finishing at 1-20 a.m.!
The first frame saw Shorthomers take the lead as Andy Jackson and Mick Thompson beat Keith Ormerod Jnr and John Lanceley. Alexandra drew level in frame two with a win for Andy Cairns and Wayne Pilling over Dale Smith and Craig Franks.
John Lanceley got the better of Mick Thompson in frame three for Alexandra, but it after frame four it was 2-2, with Andy Jackson taking full advantage of an uncharacteristic missed black by Wayne Pilling.
Craig Franks and Keith Ormerod Jnr took to the table in frame five, and with nerves jangling in both players, it was Shorthomers man Franks who eventually prevailed taking the scoreline to 3-2 in their favour. In frame six, Mick Devine never really got on terms with opponent Andy Cairns, who eventually levelled the match.
The final frame saw old campaigner Dale Smith for Shorthomers take on Alexandra’s Dave Drinkwater. Smith had the first opportunity at the black, but his miss was subsequently severely punished as Drinkwater laid a series of snookers which eventually saw him take the frame and match to crown Alexandra as this season’s knockout champions.
