JANE McGregor rounded off a successful season, which has seen her handicap reduced to six, by reaching all three of the ladies’ matchplay finals at Nelson.
Last Saturday, in the Ladies’ Doubles Final, Jane (6) and Lynne Grandfield (8) took on Betty Dixon (19) and Cath Walne(14).
In damp, drizzly conditions the four ladies played excellent golf in a match that was extremely tight, with never more than two holes in it.
Cath and Betty played well to stay in front until the 15th.
Having seen their lead disappear, they immediately struck back at the 16th.
Lynne and Jane had to win the 18th to stay in the match.
This they did - but they then failed to cope with having to give shots on the tricky 1st as Cath and Betty took a deserved win.
This Saturday, in the Ladies’ Club Championship, Jane was up against Yuk Yui.
In a scratch match in which she was definitely the underdog, Yuk started strongly, winning the 1st and 3rd holes.
Jane steadied and got into her stride on the 4th.
Playing some excellent golf, Jane went on to win on the 13th hole to become club champion at last, having come so close on the last four occasions.
The following day, she was up against Frances Sparks (18) in the Ladies’ Trophy Final.
Another day - back on the first tee at 9 a.m., different opponent.
Nerves managed to unsettle Jane, yet again, on the 1st hole, putting her drive into the trees.
However, she managed to settle to the task in hand quicker than Frances and won the hole.
This set the pattern for the match.
Extremely strong winds were a factor and Jane coped with this better.
Frances settled by the 5th hole and won with a nett birdie, but Jane’s extra length and super putting carried her through to win on the 14th hole.
