John wins close competition at Ghyll for memorial trophy

A very close competition at Ghyll saw John McGeachie win the D. Robinson Memorial Trophy with a nett 70.

The category one winner was Trevor Kegg with a nett 70,

The Category two winner was Jack Farnhill, also with a nett 70, and the category three winner was David Bellwood with a nett 71.

Meanwhile, the ladies played for the Slater Shield last Tuesday in very wet weather conditions.

The winner, with 34 points, was Barbara Chapman, who finished one point better than Stephanie Robinson.

Third, also with 33 points, was Susan Tattersall.

A group of vintage Clarets will be giving up their time at Ghyll this afternoon for a junior fund raising competition.

They will be playing in teams of four - a former Claret plus three club players.

Following the golf there will be pie and peas and then a full evening of entertainment.

The event is open to all members and non-members, with all welcome to support Ghyll’s junior section and have an enjoyable day.

Cost is £15 per player, and full details and tee times can be found on the gent’s notice board at the club.

At Colne, the Clifford Bulcock Bogey competition was held on Saturday.

The winner of the mixed event was Harry Bolton (+3), ahead of Ian Robinson (+1).

Howard Lonsdale (level) was third.

The ladies’ section winner was Irene Lonsdale.

The Colne ladies’ Handicap team played away at Chorley and came away with a 4-3 victory.

In the junior section at Nelson, Declan Buksh won the prestigious Clifford Hartley Cup with a fantastic round of 70-7-63.

Second was Joe Flannagan with a 74-6-68, with Sam Grcar third (76-5-71).

Flannagan went on to win Sunday’s Marsden Heights Cup with a round of 79-6-73.
