Karen helps set European record at National Masters in Sheffield

Colne ASC’s Karen Driver played a part in setting a European record at the ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships (25m) at Ponds Forge.

Karen, competing in the 40 to 44 years age group, swam for Sub 160 Masters in the women’s 800m Freestyle Team Relay, with Nicola Latty from Oundle, Gloucester’s Jessica Wooddisse and former GB swimmer Sarah Collins.

The quartet lowered the European record by 21 seconds, and came with 15 seconds of the World record for the 160-199 years age group in a time of 9:12.35.

Earlier, Karen took part in the 1,500m Freestyle and won in a time of 19:29.01.

Later on, Colne’s Philip Croxall, competing in the 45 to 49 years age group, was 10th in the 100m Individual Medley in 1:12.75, and was then fifth in the 200m Breaststroke in a time of 2:55.96.

Philip and Karen also took part in the 400m Freestyle. Karen was second in 4:59.95 while Philip was sixth in 4:50.43.

Philip then finished the 100m Breaststroke sixth in 1:19.21, his first sub 1:20 for three years, and Karen was eighth in the 200m Freestyle in 2:26.15, before coming second in the 800m Freestyle in 10:15.04. Philip was eighth in the 50m Breaststroke in 35.52 seconds and the 200m Individual Medley in 2:41.59.
