Barnoldswick’s Lucy Horrocks enjoyed a great start to the new year when she claimed the National Trophy Series title in Shrewsbury.
The West Craven Technology College pupil, who rides for Hope Factory Racing, finished in second place in the Under 14 race, behind Megan James of Abergavenny RC after getting caught up in an early crash in horrendous and muddy conditions.
But second place was enough to claim overall series victory after four wins and a fourth place in the previous five meetings.
Lucy managed to catch the eventual winner James after the crash, but the effort she had to put in to catch her tired her too much for the final push for the line, although both girls were well ahead of the remaining Under 14 girls.
Poppy Wildman, who was Lucy’s closest rival in the series, did not finish in the top three, sealing Luc
Lucy had started her campaign with a fourth-place finish in round one in Monmouthshire in October, but the following month, in Southampton, Lucy finished top of the pile.
She backed up that win with another success at Durham University Cricket Club, leading from the start, to close the gap to Wildman of Nottingham Clarion CC to two points.
She made it a hat-trick of wins at Milton Keynes Bowl to overhaul Wildman, before triumphing at Peel Park in Bradford, West Yorkshire in round five.
It adds to a superb season for the youngster, who also helped the North West B team win the Inter Area Team Championships youth section at Prissick Base in Middlesbrough in November, finishing as top team scorer.
