Members of Marsden Park Golf Club showed their support when Mr President David Perks introduced the 2016 Captain John Catlow and Junior Captain Thomas Nicholson at the traditional drive in.
Following on from the drive in, members competed in a 9-hole competition.
M. Lloyd won the men’s prize with a score of 37-4.5-32.5 closely followed by Craig Watson, whose score of 40-7-33 pipped Brian Lord’s score of 41-7.5-33.5 into third place.
A score of 46-12-34 gave Julie Alderson the ladies’ prize, with Natalie Cinnamond in second place three shots behind.
The President later informed the members that there are exciting changes planned for the coming season, which has encouraged 20 new golfers joining the club.
Due to cutbacks, there are talks that the course is under threat of closure.
To ensure the future of this beautiful course, more support is required, more than previous years from members old and new and from the community.
Recently, the club received a year’s grace before the future of the course will again come under scrutiny.
Having come under threat, the response on Twitter and Facebook led to an online petition being launched, which, within days, had hundreds of signatories.
That led to a “Show of Support” day organised at the club, with hundreds of golfers, residents and local councillors turning out at the Townhouse Road club.
People came from across the borough to lend their support to the campaign to keep the Nelson course open.
Despite not getting many answers on the day, the course has had a year’s stay of execution.
