The Division One leaders in the North Hockey Women’s League took the lead against Newcastle University against the run of play from a penalty corner.

Charlotte Hartley was fouled in the D having pounced on Lisa Crewe’s pass down the sideline and it was Crewe who stepped up to convert with a straight strike.

The hosts equalised before the interval when Jan Cormack thought she’d done enough when clearing off the line but Newcastle followed up quickly with a strike on the angle.

The home side had only lost once this season but they were lucky not to go behind when Hartley, Olivia Bythell and Hayley Baines all went close with chances.

Forest did restore their lead when Steph Bedford’s determination paid off following great work from Bythell.

However, in the final seconds of the game Newcastle took Forest by surprise as they snatched a point.

That setback would be a huge test of character for Forest but it was one that they passed with flying colours with a five-star display against Bowden.

Crewe scored the first of her hat-trick after Freya Bythell had opened the scoring, drag flicking the ball high in to the net at a penalty corner.

Crewe grabbed her second after the break, mirroring her first when drag flicking the ball home from another penalty corner.

Bythell netted her second when rounding the goalkeeper and driving the ball in to the net to make it 4-0 while Crewe was rewarded with her third with a straight strike at a penalty corner.
