Pendle Triathlon Club’s Stephen Gregory romped to victory at the 2014 Pendle Triathlon on Sunday morning.

Hundreds of spectators turned out, braving the wind and rain to cheer on the competitors.

A strong field from across the North of England assembled in Barnoldswick to take on the course of a 750m swim, a 22.4km cycle and a 5 km run.

On the back of some strong early season performances at the Ciltheroe Triathlon and Newby Hall Duathlon, one of the pre-race favourites Gregory took the honours on the day, completing the course in a time of 1 hour and 8 minutes, a clear 1 minute and 28 seconds ahead of second place Jonathan Ferguson of Rossendale Triathlon Club, who in turn was over a minute ahead of third placed David Mirfield (Ride-on).

Louise Hanley led the ladies home in a time of 1 hour 17 minutes 36 seconds, with Angela Knowles in second place and Annaliese Nevins in third.

From a local viewpoint, 48 Pendle residents took part, and for some this was their first-ever event.

Ruth Irons from Barnoldswick claimed the trophy for first local lady, and Trawden’s Gregory was first local male.

Mark Burrows, Chairman of the event organisers Pendle Triathlon Club said: “The weather didn’t dampen anybody’s sprits.

“The spectators and volunteer marshals were fantastic and provided an excellent atmosphere for really enjoyable and competitive racing.

“The organising committee would like to say, a big thank you, to all the volunteers who helped out and made the event a great success.”

The trophies were presented by Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson.
