Turbines hang on to start the new season with a victory

West Craven Turbines returned to action for the 2014-2015 campaign with a narrow victory over Hyndburn Colts.

New head coach Phil Smith opted for an experienced starting five of Pete Marshall, Phil Smith, Raul Gonzalez, Renko Ireton and Dan Widdup, along with a bench of Ben Capps, Pete Robinson, Roman Bradshaw, Jack Wellings and new player Ashleigh Tattersall.

An even first quarter ended 15-13 to the Turbines, withd Gonzalez crashing the boards to take a 4-0 lead early on, before a big three-point shot from Ireton and important points from last season’s MVP Marshall.

The team toughened up their defence in the second quarter, conceding only eight points as they extended their lead to 29-21.

The Colts came out fighting after half but big scores from Gonzalez, Marshall, Widdup and Robinson kept the Turbines in the lead going into the fourth quarter, 43-38.

As the final quarter proceeded, both teams came out fighting with Colts’ Glowa hitting 16 of his team’s 18 points, including four three-pointers.

However the Turbines responded with important points from Capps and Gonzalez.

As time ran out, Marshall hit two free throws to give the Turbines a four-point win.

MVP was Gonzalez, who hit 21 points as well as gaining big rebounds both offensively and defensively.

Turbines were back in action last night against league returnees the Police.
