Brave ex-landlady’s dream to meet Jeremy Kyle comes true

Beverley Barritt (48) was a familiar face behind the bar of the Duke of York pub in Colne Road during the 1990s, but for the last 15 years has bravely battled the crippling effects of Huntington’s Disease.

Mum-of-three Beverley, described as “feisty” by her lifelong best friend Julie Frayling, has been determined not to let the debilitating illness stop her from enjoying life.

And top of her wish list was to be in the audience for ITV’s Jeremy Kyle Show.

Julie, who attended Barden Junior and Walshaw Girls School with Beverley, said: “Beverley is a real character, very feisty, and has been determined not to let this cruel illness stop her from enjoying herself.

“I would like to thank the British red Cross for supplying an ambulance and care to take Beverley to see the show at Media City.

“She sat on the front row and even got a kiss off Jeremy who was brilliant with her. It was lovely – she was so happy she cried.”

Beverley requires round-the-clock care from her five independent carers Catherine Paterson, Joanne Jesson, Julie Cunningham, Veronica Cullen and Kay Ashcroft, as well as sister Lorraine Walsh, who have also helped to take her on day trips to Blackpool and Pontins in Southport.

Catherine said: “Everyone knew Beverley when she had the Duke of York. She’s always liked a good laugh and used to joke that she threw out any trouble-makers herself.

“Beverley was a real wildcat who liked to have a drink and a good laugh. She’s mad on Queen and also enjoys seeing rock music tribute acts.

“Beverley’ illness has run in the family, but she has fought it with real courage. She likes to dress up and makes sure her outfit matches.”
