Pie launch marks 400th anniversary of Pendle Witches’ Feast of Malkin Tower

Witches and warlocks gathered in Sabden this week to celebrate the anniversary of the Malkin Tower feast in April 1612.

The Sanwitches deli on Whalley Road in the village has cooked up Malkin Pie to mark the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witch trials in August and ingredients are based on those the accused witches ate at the feast on Good Friday four centuries ago.

Beef, lamb, bacon, herbs, spices and pulses have all gone into the cooking cauldron for the filling and the pie is topped off with a suet lid.

The whole village had been invited to the event and the pie is said to have been greeted warmly with a cacophony of cackles.
