Colne’s free music festival is set to get off to a magical start this weekend.

GreenRock Concert, which will be staged on the Millennium Green, off Shaw Street, from noon until 7pm on Saturday, will begin with entertainment from Peter Dean Magic.

The popular Colne Town Council event will also include a diverse range of acts, kicking off with new band Relic - who wowed the crowds at this year’s Great British Rhythm and Blues Festival.

Chair of the town council’s events committee Coun. Dorothy Lord said: “We would like to see families come to us early and we have designed the beginning of GreenRock with this in mind, having acted on feedback from last year.

“Our events licence has a strict limit on numbers and, once we reach it, it will be one out and one in, so we are urging people to come to the Millennium Green early if they don’t want to be disappointed.”

Directional signs featuring the GreenRock logo have been put up around Colne in advance of the concert.

Coun. Sarah Cockburn- Price said: “The Millennium Green might be tucked away off Bridge Street but its topography means it acts almost like a natural amphitheatre for our performers and GreenRockers. Its enclosed nature makes it a safe and ideal venue for GreenRock.”

Colne Tyre Centre is sponsoring GreenRock 2014 – the first time the event has attracted a sponsor.

And for the first time there will be a merchandising table for featured bands. In addition to a wide range of catering options, other local businesses are supporting GreenRock by attending with stalls.

Coun. Neil Butterworth said: “This is a real, grassroots, community event. We want families to come and celebrate with us during what promises to be a superb day’s entertainment and all for free.

“After a few unfortunate incidents last year, we are asking that people leave their dogs at home. This is a decision we are prepared to review in public forum, but this year we are saying ‘bring picnics, bring your children, bring your grannies and let’s all have fun’!”
